The handmade crochet accessories from Hilja Design in Finland is made by maker, language teacher and DIY creative Pirjo, who live in the capital area around helsinki in Finland. She loves different kinds of crafts: knitting, sewing, paper craft and DIY projects for the home, but most of all she enjoys to crochet.
“The first thing I remember crocheting was a cardigan made for my very first Barbie doll at the age of 8 back in the 1980’s. It was made of dark blue and dark red wool yarn and it didn’t go that well together with rest of the outfit she had. I can’t say I was smitten with either the cardigan or the craft back then. The bug bit me much later in 2009, when I crocheted my first basket of t-shirt yarn. Gradually granny squares came along, crocheted toys and especially crocheted rugs. A couple of years ago I discovered tapestry crochet and it is pretty much what I have been exploring, learning and playing with ever since,” Pirlo explains on her blog hiljadesign.fi.
She loves the versatility of crochet, the fact that so many different textures, shapes and patterns can be made with a simple hook and a ball of yarn. She is drawn to make especially interior related pieces as well as crocheted accessories. The inspiration for her projects come partly from nature, partly from interior design world and partly from travels near and far.
The name for Pirjo’s small business and blog came from her grandmother Hilja.
“She was a skilled seamstress working independently in a little town in Eastern Finland. Unfortunately I was only seven when she died so I don’t have that many memories of her. But I remember sitting in her warm lap and I remember her laughter. And I guess that is partly what crochet and crafting is about, creating warmth, love and joy with your two hands for yourself and the people around you,” she says.
The name Hilja also comes from the Finnish word “hiljaisuus” which means quietness and is important for Pirjo as well. Her work life as a teacher is quite noisy so crafting means quiet time for her, and gives her balance in her everyday life.
